Tomoya Okazaki is the main character of Clannad. He's got the reputation of a delinquent—always showing up late, ditching class, and generally staying out all night, which is pretty much the opposite of what the school wants from him.
He and Kotomi Ichinose grew up together, though they're not super close anymore. His actual best friend is Youhei Sunohara, who sticks with him through his rebellious phase. As the story goes on, Tomoya ends up befriending a bunch of people—Kyou, Ryou, Tomoyo, Fuko, Nagisa, and others—and despite his rough exterior, he's surprisingly good at helping people sort out their issues. Fans note that he genuinely cares about his friends, even if he doesn't always show it. Interestingly, he seems completely oblivious to the fact that several girls at school are interested in him.
