Stokes was an Alliance rear admiral and vice commander of the 11th Fleet. He backed the National Salvation Military Council's coup against the Alliance government, fighting alongside his superior, Legrange.
When Yang Wen-li refused to join the coup, the 11th Fleet moved to engage the loyalist forces. At the Battle of Doria, Yang caught them off-guard and split the fleet in two. Dusty Attemborough's squadron pushed forward against Stokes's isolated forces—who kept advancing for a while, probably because their communications had been cut.
Stokes eventually realized what was happening and tried to rejoin Legrange, but Attemborough's relentless attacks forced him to deal with that threat first. What he didn't know was that this played directly into Yang's strategy. Attemborough kept his distance, only striking when Stokes turned back toward the main battle, effectively keeping him away from Legrange long enough for Yang to defeat him.
By the time the rest of Yang's fleet arrived to support Attemborough, Stokes was vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Despite Yang offering him a chance to surrender, Stokes refused to stand down. He and the rest of the 11th Fleet were lost in the battle.
