Synopsis

A 150-year cold war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance finally breaks when two exceptional leaders emerge: Reinhard von Lohengramm, a brilliant military strategist with idealistic goals, and Yang Wenli, a historian who values democracy above all else. Reinhard rises through the Empire's ranks with help from his childhood friend Kircheis, but he's fighting a two-front battle—against the FPA and against the corrupt Goldenbaum Dynasty itself. His real motivation is personal: freeing his sister from the Kaiser's control and building a unified human empire under legitimate rule. Yang, meanwhile, has to hold onto his democratic principles even as the FPA crumbles around him, while also mentoring his protégé Julian Mintz on why autocracy isn't the answer. As their philosophies collide and the war grinds on with mounting casualties, both commanders eventually confront the same uncomfortable question: what are they really fighting for?
