Gene made a rash call during a reconnaissance mission in Side 7 alongside Denim and Slender—he broke formation and charged straight at the Earth Federation forces. Amuro Ray, however, managed to reach the RX-78-2 Gundam and engaged him in combat. Once Gene got a real feel for the Gundam's overwhelming power, he tried to cut and run, but Amuro's Beam Saber cleaved his Zaku clean in half. The mobile suit exploded with Gene still inside.
