Her parents died when a firework called Ball 205 malfunctioned during a festival the year before. Rather than give up on the idea, Kodama spent the following year planning to launch Ball 205 herself at nightfall—essentially trying to finish what her parents started. Usopp ended up helping her pull it off.
As a fun bit of trivia, her name "kodama" also means "echo" in Japanese.
