Chamo is a chain-smoking, prehensile-tailed ermine who met Negi when the kid freed him from a trap at age five—and he's been his loyal sidekick ever since. He's got all the classic perverted anime mascot character traits down pat: lingerie theft, sketchy schemes, the whole deal.
He genuinely cares about Negi and will fight to protect him, but that doesn't stop him from trying to milk the situation for profit. His main racket involves pushing Negi to make probationary magical contracts with his students, since each one nets him 50,000 Ermine Dollars. He sees opportunity everywhere.
Chamo serves as Negi's go-to advisor on most matters, though his judgment can be. questionable. He's weirdly good at analyzing dangerous situations and staying calm when everyone else is panicking—he'll throw together a plan and think strategically about matchups and enemy tactics. The problem is his schemes usually have massive holes in them, which he'll openly admit without much shame. Still, his ability to read people and assess individual strength is surprisingly sharp.
Asuna makes him pay whenever she catches him either scheming or doing something perverted, which happens regularly enough.
One thing worth noting: while being transformed into an ermine is supposedly a punishment the magic academy dishes out, Chamo isn't a mage who got hit with that spell. He's actually some kind of elf or fairy—or more specifically, a Cait Sith, which he's genuinely proud of.
