Saphir (Sapphire in the English dub) is the Alchemist of the Black Moon Clan and Prince Demand's younger brother. He's best known for being the rare voice of reason in a group prone to recklessness—more cautious and analytical than pretty much everyone around him, including his own brother. Notably, he invented the Black Crystal earrings that define his clan's look, yet he's the only member who doesn't actually wear them.
In the manga, Saphir gravitates toward working with the Clan's lowly droids rather than dealing with his unpredictable older brother. He even questions whether Wiseman's influence over Demand makes sense, which does not go over well—Demand lashes out and accuses him of wanting power for himself. When Demand drags Sailor Moon to his castle on Nemesis, she finds her way into Saphir's lab. He admits their entire plan is flawed and she's innocent, but tries to kill her anyway, convinced that she and the Silver Crystal are the root of all their suffering. This triggers Neo Queen Serenity to unlock Sailor Moon's power on Nemesis itself, destabilizing the whole planet. Wiseman saves them both by bringing them to his castle, then takes control of Saphir's mind and gifts him demonic hands to use as weapons. Later it's revealed that Demand's "Evil Eye" protected him from the mind control.
The anime reimagines him with way more sympathy. There's an unspoken history between him and Petz, the eldest Ayakashi sister—they never share a scene in the manga, though the English dub hints at his feelings for Esmeraude instead. In flashbacks, he remembers growing up on the bleak wasteland of Nemesis with his brother, who promised to show him real flowers on Earth someday. Saphir discovers Wiseman confessing that he's just using all of them, barely escapes, and manages to steal the Black Crystal and smuggle it to Earth's past. He reconnects briefly with Petz and gets help from the Sailor Senshi, but Wiseman kills him before he can expose the betrayal to Demand. When he dies, the bandage falls from his head, revealing his Black Moon mark has vanished.
