Kanbei is a legendary gambler known for an almost supernatural ability to read luck with his right eye—earned him the nickname "Tsukiyomi" (roughly "luck-reader"). He's got serious charisma, the kind that makes people believe he can predict anything at the tables.
Gintoki and Hasegawa first run into him during one of their worst losing streaks. They quickly catch on that he's cheating, but before they can do much about it, they all get dragged in by Kujaku Hime and forced to play Mahjong against one of her players. During the game, their opponent asks the obvious question—can Kanbei really read luck? He reveals the truth: he deliberately sacrificed his luck-reading eye to save a friend who was being held hostage. He had to cut it out himself.
