Rem is the Shinigami who recruits Misa into the Death Note game by handing her a Death Note and Shinigami eyes. Like Ryuk, Rem owns two Death Notes—though unlike him, she gives hers away deliberately. She inherited the second one from Jealous, a Shinigami who died protecting Misa, and felt obligated to pass it on to her. More than just the notebook, Rem inherited Jealous's attachment to Misa as well. She's fiercely protective of her, so much so that she directly threatens Light: if anything happens to Misa before her natural lifespan ends, Rem will kill him.
The series makes a point of establishing that Rem is female—though the second live-action film glosses over this detail, leaving it up in the air.
