Yuusuke Urameshi

Yuusuke's got short black hair he keeps slightly spiked with gel, brown eyes, and a pretty lean build that belies how strong he actually is. He's got a handful of unspiked bangs hanging down, and he deliberately wears a green school uniform instead of the standard blue one—a direct middle finger to Sarayashiki Junior High's strict dress code. His style changes throughout the series, but he's usually in some kind of fighter's gear. He starts out noticeably short, which Keiko doesn't let him forget about.
Growing up without a father and with a mother who's perpetually absent—either drunk or out partying—Yuusuke never really had much supervision. He's hot-headed, impulsive, and enjoys throwing his weight around with people who're intimidated by him. His defining trait, though, is an almost primal love of fighting. He's never been the sharpest tool in the shed, and he'll admit it, but his desire to fight comes from genuine enjoyment of a good scrap rather than any real bloodlust. He actually avoids killing when he can.
Most people at school fear or actively dislike him, but the truth is he's widely misunderstood. Keiko's one of the rare few who sees past the delinquent act and recognizes how genuinely kind he is underneath, and they develop real feelings for each other pretty quick. He's fiercely protective of her. Kuwabara starts as someone he clashes with, but they eventually develop mutual respect—Kuwabara's basically the only person who truly gets him. Hiei's trickier; they've got this intense rivalry going, and Yuusuke sometimes seems almost awed by Hiei's abilities, but there's real respect there too. They'd die for each other. Kurama's someone Yuusuke feels genuinely close to and trusts completely. He leans on Kurama's wisdom and sometimes asks him for advice when he's not sure which direction to go.
