Nataku draws inspiration from the Taoist deity Nezha, though in this series he's a half-mortal war god. He's the one who managed to befriend Gokuu back when Gokuu was still divine—no small feat given how closed off Gokuu tends to be. At some point, though, Nataku falls into a catatonic state. The anime never really explains why, and he ends up spending eternity in heaven's garden, basically just staring ahead with only the Goddess of Mercy for company.
In terms of personality, Nataku's the complete opposite of Gokuu. He's somber and resigned to his role as a divine puppet. Being named War Prince was supposed to be an honor, but it's clear he never wanted it—the position eventually gets passed to Homura anyway.
His background has some striking parallels to the original mythology: a military father, a spear as his weapon, and a lot of expectations he never asked for. What's harder to ignore, though, is that his father is basically using him as a stepping stone for his own status with the Gods. Nataku gets blamed for misfortunes that aren't really his fault while his father chases recognition. That dynamic doesn't last forever, though. When Field Marshal Tenpou (Cho Hakkai's past life) finds out what's going on, he gives the Commander a proper lecture, and the mistreatment more or less stops.
