Ippo Makunouchi is the story's main character. He splits his time between boxing and helping his mother Hiroko run the family fishing boat business out of Tokyo. He's best known for his aggressive peek-a-boo fighting style and devastating punching power—his three signature techniques (a liver blow that cracks ribs, the Gazelle Punch uppercut, and the Dempsey Roll) draw clear inspiration from boxing legends Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jack Dempsey.
School was rough for Ippo. He dealt with bullying until Takamura stepped in and brought him to Kamogawa Gym, where coaches quickly noticed his explosive raw power. Watching Mike Tyson fight sparked something in him—he decided boxing could give him a fresh start, a way to reinvent himself as someone strong. He earned Takamura and trainer Genji Kamogawa's respect fast and committed to the pro circuit.
His debut came against Oda Yusuke, a guy with a reputation for laziness until his girlfriend threatened to dump him—that lit a fire under him. There was bad blood between Ippo and Oda from the start thanks to a misunderstanding that made Oda think Ippo was mocking him. The fight itself went Ippo's way early on, but a cut nearly ended things until his corner stopped the bleeding. He turned it around with a flurry of jabs that knocked Oda out cold, securing the win.
