Marian Cross is Allen's mentor and one of the five Exorcist Generals, though he's best known for being unreliable—he disappeared for four years without contacting headquarters, leaving Allen to fend for himself. Most of Allen's memories involving his teacher are traumatic (though often hilarious in retrospect), and Cross's tendency to rack up massive debts means Allen frequently finds himself working to pay them off. It's the kind of relationship that explains why Allen's genuinely afraid of the guy.
Cross possesses a rare and poorly understood ability: he can convert Akuma into obedient soldiers under his command. Nobody knows exactly how he does it, but it's a skill that makes him dangerously effective. There's also speculation that he can control the Noah's Ark—supposedly granted to him by a Noah family traitor who was later killed by the Millennium Earl. Whether that's true remains unclear, but the Earl seems genuinely worried about Cross in ways he doesn't about other exorcists, which suggests something real is there.
What really sets Cross apart is that he's the only exorcist to wield two pieces of Innocence. "Grave of Maria" is a parasitic-type weapon inhabiting a corpse that exclusively obeys Cross, while "Judgement" is a massive revolver that serves as his primary Anti-Akuma weapon. He's gone missing since his recent conversation with Allen about the 14th's origins.
