Bason is the ghost of an ancient Chinese warrior bound to serve Ren, the current heir of the Tao family. He addresses his young master as "Bocchama" in the original Japanese version, though English releases use "Master Ren." What started as pure obligation has evolved into genuine friendship—Bason genuinely cares about Ren's wellbeing, breaking down emotionally when Ren faces imprisonment at his father's hands.
Like his master, Bason begins the series seeming cold and detached, but softens considerably through interactions with You Asakura. He's fiercely loyal, willing to serve by any means necessary, and brings genuine warmth to their relationship as the story progresses.
In combat, Bason wields a kwan dao (a curved-edged halberd) with devastating effect. He amplifies Ren's strength and speed, can enlarge the weapon itself, and throws down powerful techniques like the Golden Punch. His connection to his old war horse, Hei-Tao, runs so deep that the spirit can merge with Ren's horse Bái-Feng to execute the Perfect Re-enactment of the Vorpal Dance. When assuming Giant Spirit Form, Bason transforms into a towering mechanical entity capable of launching fireballs.
Despite early hostility with Amidamaru—Ren's other spirit companion—the two eventually develop a competitive but genuine friendship.
