As head of the Kuchiki clan, he sports the same distinctive scarf that Byakuya wears today, though he skips the fancy aristocratic hairpiece his descendant favors.
He shows up in the Turn Back the Pendulum arc looking roughly the same age as present-day Yamamoto, which raises the question of whether he was one of the original thirteen captains—though that seems unlikely given that only Yamamoto, Unohana, Ukitake, and Kyōraku are confirmed as the remaining old-guard captains. In the flashback, he's shown introducing a young Byakuya to Yoruichi Shihōin, the 2nd Division captain at that time. He clearly had his hands full with Byakuya's reckless temper, noting that the kid would make an excellent leader if he could just learn some restraint.
