Fujita is a magic user in En's domain, though he's frankly not very skilled at it. His smoke only shows up when things get serious—when he or people close to him are actually in danger. His big moment came when he and a friend ended up in the Hole, where non-users live. They ran into Caiman, a non-user with a weird mutation that makes him immune to magic. Caiman killed his friend, and in the panic to escape, Fujita managed to open a door between the two worlds with his smoke—something that apparently takes real talent, judging by how impressed other characters got about it later.
Determined to avenge his friend, Fujita wanted to go back into the Hole armed to the teeth, but En's messenger intercepted him with new orders: find the magic user responsible for turning Caiman into a reptilian mutation. Some digging pointed him toward Ebisu, a transformation specialist. Fujita had actually seen her in the Hole before, so he tracked her down just in time—Caiman had her cornered with his jaws around her, her fingers already broken from a failed magical attempt on him.
Fujita saved her life, but at a cost. En sent Noi, one of his higher-ups, to fix her face and restore her fingers, but the trauma did a number on Ebisu's mind. She regressed to acting like a kid and lost most of her memory.
After that, Fujita basically becomes part of the team sent to deal with Caiman. Noi and Shin handle the actual extermination, but Fujita tags along—both because he wants his revenge and because someone needs to look after Ebisu while everyone waits for her memory to come back.
