Mikihisa Asakura is Yoh's father and a skilled shaman who trained extensively to atone for a critical failure early in his life. In the manga, he's part of Team Kabbalahers alongside Redseb and Seyram. He fights with two spirits—a tanuki and a kitsune—using stones as the focus for his Over Souls.
Background
Before becoming a shaman, Mikihisa was a broke musician living in a cramped apartment with bandmates. He met Keiko, Yoh's mother, when she hired him to play a song for ten yen at a train station. She'd just been dumped and confessed she could see ghosts. One thing led to another, and they ended up together—though the relationship was formalized through muku no naru, the Japanese tradition where a man marries into a family with no male heir. Mikihisa took the Asakura name to preserve the bloodline since Keiko was her parents' only child.
When Keiko got pregnant with twins, Yohmei (the family patriarch) decided to kill both babies to prevent Hao from surviving long enough to enter the upcoming Shaman Fight. During the delivery, Yohmei summoned a shikigami to do the deed, but hesitated when faced with his own grandchild. The Spirit of Fire intervened, destroying the shikigami and attacking Yohmei. Mikihisa took the hit meant for his father-in-law and suffered severe facial burns. Before he could fight back, the Spirit of Fire spirited Hao away, leaving Yoh to be born safely moments later. Mikihisa now wears a mask to cover those scars.
The experience haunted him. He blamed himself for not stopping Hao when he had the chance and threw himself into relentless training across the globe to compensate. Along the way, he took Tamao Tamamura as an apprentice, bringing her along on his travels.
The Shaman Fight
During the tournament, Mikihisa's main job is keeping tabs on Yoh from the shadows—literally watching from treetops during battles. He also mentors Yoh's crew in the Cho Senji Ryakketsu techniques, including teaching Ren the FumonTonkou.
He was close friends with Professor Camel Munzer, father of Redseb and Seyram. After the professor died, Mikihisa looked after the kids and formed Team Kabbalahers partly to prevent the dangerous Golem from falling into the wrong hands. The team made it to the final six but withdrew before the crucial match between Team The Ren and Team Funbari Onsen, letting both squads advance alongside X-I and the Hoshigumi.
In the Anime
The anime keeps Mikihisa's core role intact—the watchful father training from the sidelines. Since Redseb and Seyram don't exist in the anime, his Team Kabbalahers affiliation was dropped entirely.
