Shungiku is a scarred serial killer known as the "Killer of 99"—a reputation he earned before joining Mushibugyō as an act of penance. He's the son of a bandit who genuinely tried to stay out of the criminal world until his mother was murdered. Blaming his father for the tragedy, Shungiku went on a rampage, slaughtering his father's entire gang and everyone standing in his path before finally killing his father himself. The twist came later: he discovered his mother hadn't been killed by his father at all, but by a member of Mushikari instead. Now he's driven by a need to find and avenge her against whoever was actually responsible.
