He's widely regarded as a brilliant keeper. Back in his elementary school days, he made it to the Shizuoka prefecture juveniles championship finals twice—once in 5th grade and again in 6th grade.
By the time of the Kids' Dream arc, he'd become honest about his limitations. He knew he couldn't reliably punch away or stop most of Tsubasa's powerful long-range shots and headers, so his team had to get creative. They developed a two-step defensive strategy specifically designed to neutralize both Tsubasa and Wakabayashi, rather than relying on him alone to handle everything.
