Light Yagami starts the series as a third-year student at Daikoku Private Academy, cramming at Gamou Prep on the side. He comes from a solid family—his father Soichiro heads the Police Force, his mother is Sachiko, and he has a younger sister named Sayu.
When spring 2004 rolls around, Light enters To-Oh University as a freshman and somehow manages to land one of the two freshman representative positions (L gets the other). He's a legitimate athlete too; spectators at a university tennis match with L mention he was the junior high tennis champion in both 1999 and 2000 before dropping the sport entirely in high school.
Light's basically a genius. He's got this odd physicality where he looks kind of delicate but moves like someone who actually knows how to fight—good at spotting weaknesses in an opponent. Once he gets his hands on the Death Note, he becomes "Kira" and starts reshaping the world according to his own vision of justice, convinced he's the only one smart enough to be humanity's judge and guide.
