Lyserg is a British shaman and traditional dowser whose life was shaped by tragedy—his parents were killed by Hao when he was only six years old. His father, Liam Diethel, had wanted him to become a detective, and that ambition stuck with him. He's best known for his dramatic and often antagonistic role in the series, clashing with Yoh's team multiple times despite traveling with them for extended stretches.
When he first shows up, Lyserg is aggressive and unhinged, attacking Yoh's group to test their strength and putting both Ren and Horohoro in the hospital with a single blow. Yoh has to literally beat some sense into him before he calms down and agrees to join their journey to the Patch Village. It becomes clear pretty quickly that Lyserg's emotional stability takes a hit whenever parental figures or family dynamics come into play—his hatred for Hao is volcanic and personal, enough to make him snap at just the mention of the guy's name.
Despite his issues, he's got a genuinely kind heart underneath, even if he leans toward being an anti-hero. His two driving goals are revenge against Hao and becoming a great detective like his father. He's also apparently so striking in appearance that Ryu once mistook him for a girl. Of the five main warriors, Lyserg is the most intelligent, which pairs interestingly with his emotional volatility.
(His spirit's Japanese name, Morphine, and his own name are both drug references—the English versions changed them to avoid obvious associations.)
