A.J. is a Trainer living somewhere between Cerulean City and Vermilion City. He's obsessed with becoming a Pokémon Master, and he's pinned all his hopes on his favorite—a Sandshrew he's trained extensively.
What A.J. is probably best known for, though, is running his own Gym out of pocket. Since it wasn't officially sanctioned by the Pokémon League, trainers who battled there didn't walk away with any actual Badges. It was more of a passion project than a legitimate League facility, but A.J. took it seriously.
