Karel Ranke was a former Captain in the Czechoslovak Secret Police. He got pulled into the reading seminars that Franz Bonaparta and Peter Čapek were running, and he ended up as the long-term caretaker of the Red Rose Mansion. When Inspector Heinrich Lunge came to Prague, he convinced Ranke to let him explore the place.
Ranke was the uncle of Adolf Reinhardt, a kid who loved cocoa. Adolf had been friends with Wolfgang Grimmer back in the day—Grimmer was one of the children who'd been institutionalized at 511 Kinderheim in Germany, though his actual identity remained murky for a while.
