Urzu-1 is the current leader of SRT team, taking over command after Captain Gail McAllen's death in the novel Rocking into The Blue. He first appears in End of Day By Days and makes his anime debut in Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid. A skilled pilot of the M9D Falke, he served with MITHRIL's Mediterranean Sea Fleet before his promotion.
His arrival wasn't smooth. He immediately rubbed both Kurz Weber and Sousuke Sagara the wrong way by calling McAllen a coward—a jab that stung because McAllen was actually one of his closest friends. The tension boiled over into a practical "test" where Urzu-1 took them on, putting Kurz down with a single move and outmaneuvering Sousuke and the Arbalest. Rather than just asserting dominance, though, he used the fight to teach Sousuke something crucial: their skill levels were matched, but Sousuke's emotional attachment to the Arbalest was clouding his judgment. An Arm Slave, Urzu-1 explained, has to feel like an extension of yourself. That lesson stuck, even if Urzu-1 and Kurz never became close—they eventually developed a grudging mutual respect.
He and Melissa Mao go way back, with her calling him "Bel" as an old nickname. Both were among the handful of survivors when Melida Island came under attack near the end of Continuing on My Own, along with Kurz, Richard Mardukas, Testarossa, and most of the Tuatha de Danaan's crew.
In the TSR OVA, it's revealed he's a pretty dedicated anime otaku in his downtime.
