Giorno Giovanna wasn't born with that name. He started out as Haruno Shiobana, the son of Dio Brando and a Japanese woman—which technically makes him part Joestar, since Dio fathered him using Jonathan's body. When Giorno was young, his mother remarried an Italian man and the family moved to Italy, so the name changed along with everything else.
He's got one driving ambition: to become a mafia boss. A "Gang Star," as he calls it. That dream led him to join Passione, one of the mob's major crews. He came in as the youngest and greenest recruit, but he proved himself fast. Like, suspiciously fast. Eventually he ends up running the whole operation.
What sets Giorno apart from your typical mafia kingpin is that he actually gives a damn about people. His whole philosophy is basically Robin Hood with better suits—take from the corrupt, help the poor. It's an idealistic streak that ends up spreading through most of Passione. The only one who doesn't buy in? Their original boss. And that guy becomes their biggest problem.
