Al is a nineteen-year-old apprentice gnome—basically someone who keeps Aqua's gravity in sync with Man-Home. He's got the baby face and short stature to match, which probably contributes to him constantly making old man jokes that drive Aika absolutely crazy whenever she hears them. He wears glasses, though nobody's entirely sure if he actually needs them or just likes the look.
His nightvision is genuinely excellent, a gnome trait that comes from spending most of their lives underground. In the manga, he deals with fainting spells early on, likely because gnomes just aren't built for the intense summer heat that Neo-Venezia throws at you. Despite this, he lives on Ukijima, and he's gotten pretty comfortable looking after Akatsuki and Woody when they were younger—probably the reason he's stuck around there.
As for Aika, she's clearly got feelings for him. She gets all shy whenever he's around.
