Chapel the Evergreen is an anime-only character who served as Wolfwood's mentor and adoptive father figure within the Gung-Ho-Guns. He's best known for raising Nicholas D. Wolfwood and training him after Nicholas killed his abusive guardian.
Chapel carried a prototype version of Wolfwood's signature Cross Punisher weapon, though his splits into twin machine guns rather than the single configuration his student would later use. He dressed in dark green with red goggles permanently grafted to his face, giving him a distinctly mechanical appearance.
The relationship between Chapel and Wolfwood is central to the anime's portrayal of both characters. Chapel genuinely cared for Nicholas, which makes his later fate particularly tragic. Under Knives's control, Chapel was forced to kill Wolfwood—something that clearly tortured him. In a final act of defiance, he attempted to kill Legato, the one responsible for puppeteering him, but ultimately failed. Knives killed Chapel in response, ending his story on a note of tragedy and betrayal.
