Makoto Yuuki is an orphan who lost his parents a decade before the events of Persona 3. When he returns to his childhood city and moves into the dorm, everything changes—the building gets attacked by Shadows during the Dark Hour, and he discovers he can summon a Persona. Mitsuru recruits him to SEES, and he eventually becomes the team's combat leader.
What sets Makoto apart is his rare ability to carry multiple Personas and swap between them mid-battle. He's also the only character who can access the Velvet Room, which gives him a massive advantage in building his arsenal. Starting with Orpheus, he can eventually obtain over 170 different Personas through fusion and other methods.
Character designer Soejima spent more time on Makoto than anyone else in the game—and for good reason, since the rest of the cast was designed to complement him. Soejima wanted his expression deliberately ambiguous rather than straightforward and conventionally handsome. That calculated uncertainty became key to the character's appeal.
