Nothing ever happens in the small village of Sotoba—or so Megumi Shimizu thinks. Desperate to escape her boring hometown and its old-fashioned people, she's convinced that the newcomers in the fancy European mansion on the hill must be sophisticated and worldly. So she decides to check them out. Megumi never comes home that night. When they finally find her the next day, she's pale, weak, and covered in strange bite marks. It gets worse from there. More people start dying under identical circumstances, and soon the deaths spiral into a full-blown epidemic. As bodies pile up faster than anyone can explain them, the village doctor Toshio Ozaki, local priest Seishin Muroi, the standoffish Natsuno Yuuki, and siblings Kaori and Akira Tanaka are forced to investigate. What they discover might be more terrifying than any of them can handle—because the dead may soon outnumber the living.
