Wakaba Himeji is a fifth grader who can see things nobody else can—mostly terrifying evil spirits that have a bad habit of messing with the people around her. It's made her pretty isolated; she doesn't have friends and barely ever smiles. She's tried bringing home stray animals a few times, but her parents always make her give them back. Eventually they feel bad enough about how lonely and weird she is that they promise to let her keep whatever she brings home next. That next thing turns out to be Pupipo, a bizarre pink monster. Her parents keep their word anyway. Nobody really knows what Pupipo actually is, but it somehow shields Wakaba from all the nasty spirits she normally sees. With Pupipo around, Wakaba starts making actual friends—including a transfer student obsessed with the occult—and begins dealing with bullying issues. Having this weird pink creature in her life basically changes everything for her.
