It's 2199, and Earth is basically done for. Constant bombardment from the hostile alien empire of Gamilas has turned the planet into a radioactive wasteland, forcing what's left of humanity to hide underground. Just when things look hopeless, they catch a break: the Iscandarians, a peaceful alien civilization, reach out and hand over the blueprints for a ship powerful enough to retrieve a device that could actually restore the planet. The UN's space navy has been getting absolutely wrecked by Gamilas, so they make a desperate move. They salvage the Yamato—an old battleship that's been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for decades—and retrofit it with the Iscandar technology. The result is the Space Battleship Yamato, humanity's last real hope.
