Synopsis

Fate/Apocrypha takes place in an alternate timeline where the Greater Grail was stolen from Fuyuki after the Third Holy Grail War and vanished for decades. Fast forward to the early 2000s—around when the Fifth War should've happened in the original timeline—and the Yggdmillennia clan suddenly goes public. They announce they're leaving the Mage's Association and reveal they've had the Grail all along. The Association doesn't take this lying down and sends fifty mages to get it back. That goes about as well as you'd expect—Lancer of Black slaughters almost all of them in seconds. The sole survivor manages to trigger the Grail's backup system before dying, which summons fourteen Servants total and kicks off the Great Holy Grail War. The conflict splits into two sides: the Black Faction, made up of Yggdmillennia members, and the Red Faction, composed of Association mages plus one representative from the Church. The Grail itself also summons Ruler to keep things fair and act as referee for the whole mess.
