Nine years ago, the Empire of Giad invaded its neighbors with an army of autonomous drones called the Legion. The Republic of San Magnolia—a nation of silver-haired Alba people—evacuated its citizens into 85 districts and built their own unmanned drones, the Juggernauts, to fight back. Officially, the Republic claims to have zero casualties. But the reality on the battlefield tells a very different story. The truth is that the Colorata, a minority group confined to a hidden 86th district, are the ones actually piloting those Juggernauts. Treated as subhuman, they're forced to serve as Processors under Republican Handlers who view them with open contempt. Vladilena Milizé is a Republican soldier who hates how her own people treat the 86. When she gets assigned as handler to the Spearhead Squadron—a ragtag unit of Colorata soldiers—she finds herself drawn to them, especially their captain Shinei Nouzen. He's got an intensity and purpose that sets him apart. But getting close to him and his squad means walking a path soaked in blood and loss, and Vladilena's growing attachment to these soldiers might be leading her straight toward heartbreak.
