Synopsis

Saichi Sugimoto earned the nickname "Immortal Sugimoto" for his brutal fighting during the Russo-Japanese War, though he's hardly celebrated as a hero. Discharged from the army after nearly beating a superior officer to death, he's been struggling to survive in Hokkaido's harsh wilderness. His goal is simple: find gold to honor a promise to a fallen comrade. That is, until a stranger tells him about a legend that could change everything. According to the tale, a criminal stole gold from the Ainu—Hokkaido's indigenous people—and hid it somewhere impossible to find. Well, almost impossible. The location can only be revealed by assembling a map made from the tattooed skin of escaped convicts. When Sugimoto meets Asirpa, a young Ainu girl, they team up to track down the tattooed prisoners. But they're not alone in this hunt. Soldiers and mercenaries are after the gold too, and the Hokkaido wilderness is full of dangers. With Asirpa's knowledge of the land at their side, the two embark on a journey driven by revenge, murder, and greed.
