Getter Robo
The original Getter Robo came out 15 years before any other manga in the franchise, and it basically invented the whole combining robot concept. Millions of years ago, dinosaurs got driven underground when Getter Rays suddenly hit Earth. Over time they evolved into intelligent beings, and they've been seething ever since—bitter about humans taking over the surface and ready to wage war. Humanity's defense is Getter Robo, a machine Professor Saotome built that runs on those same Getter Rays. Three headstrong pilots control it: Ryoma, a brutal martial artist; Hayato, a genius revolutionary with serious mental issues; and Musashi, a hot-blooded judo fighter. They each pilot a combat jet that combines with the others to form different robot configurations—Getter-1 is fast and built for flying with an axe, Getter-2 is quick and has a drill, and Getter-3 is basically a tank.
