Kusuba started his career at Tokyo Movie in 1971. After a decade there, he moved to Nippon Animation in 1981, where he made his directorial debut with Fuusen no Doratarou. He became a key figure in the influential World Masterpiece Theater series throughout the following years, helping shape some of anime's most memorable adaptations. By 2004, he'd transitioned to freelance work.
