GLAY is a rock and pop band from Hakodate, Hokkaido that's been around since 1988, when guitarist Takuro and vocalist Teru formed the group during high school. What started as a two-piece project eventually expanded into the full lineup that's defined the band for decades.
The group's sound is rooted in rock and pop, though they've never been afraid to branch out—fans will hear reggae and gospel influences mixed into their catalog depending on the track. It's this willingness to experiment that's helped them stay relevant across multiple eras of Japanese rock.
By 2008, GLAY had already become one of Japan's biggest acts, with around 28 million records sold across 43 singles and another 23 million copies of their 14 albums. Those numbers tell you pretty much everything about their commercial dominance during their peak years.
