Nishigori Atsushi

Atsushi Nishigori is an animator and character designer best known for his work on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. He trained at Toei's Animation Laboratory before joining Gainax, where he was drawn to the studio's experimental style—specifically the kind of animation seen in FLCL.
He made his professional debut as a key animator on Mahoromatic, then quickly moved into storyboarding and directing with Puchi Puri Yuushii at just 24 years old. His contributions to the Top wo Nerae! 2 OVA caught enough attention that when Gainax was gearing up for what would become one of their most ambitious projects, Nishigori was brought on as character designer for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The role cemented his reputation—he won the Best Character Design award at the 7th Tokyo Animation Fair in 2008 for the TV series.
