Kazuchika Kise was born on March 6, 1965 in Osaka. He briefly attended animation school after high school but dropped out after four days—the curriculum wasn't what he was looking for. He found his real education at AnimeR, studying under Hiromi Muranaka and Moriyasu Taniguchi.
His career took off when he crossed paths with Mitsuhisa Ishikawa during production of Future Police Urashiman in 1983. Ishikawa was working at Tatsunoko Production at the time, and the connection would change everything. Kise got his break as animation supervisor on Red Photon Zillion, a Tatsunoko series that was actually made at a branch of what would eventually become Production I.G. From there, he moved into the Patlabor films, where he served as animation supervisor and basically shaped the visual DNA of Mamoru Oshii's whole run—including Mobile Police Patlabor 2 and Ghost in the Shell. He also supervised The End of Evangelion.
When Patlabor wrapped, Kise planned to head back home to Osaka. Instead, Ishikawa convinced him to stick around and become one of I.G's founding board members. It was an unexpected move, but Kise said yes, and ended up overseeing Studio 2, which he still runs today.
He's best known as a realist animator—one of the heaviest hitters in that school. Alongside Hiroyuki Okiura and Tetsuya Nishio, he's earned the nickname "one of The Three Gods I.G." Beyond the technical side, Kise's known for being laid-back and approachable, which shows in how Studio 2 operates. Even as Production I.G grew into a more corporate structure, his studio kept that scrappy, creative-freedom vibe. When it comes to hiring, he keeps it simple: "I take him or her out and have a drink together to see whether we've got an interesting kid."
