Masao Maruyama started his career in animation at Mushi Productions back in 1959. He's best known for co-founding Studio Madhouse in October 1972 alongside Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri—a studio that would go on to shape a huge part of anime history. Later, he founded MAPPA in 2011 and M2 in 2016, continuing his track record of launching influential studios. His contributions to the industry were recognized when he won the Special/Lifetime Achievement Award at the 7th Animation Kobe in 2002.
