Yonetani Yoshitomo (also credited as Kometani Yoshitomo before 1999) was born May 13, 1963 in Tokyo. He graduated from Tokyo Designer Gakuin and went on to become a director, songwriter, and occasional singer—the latter work he does under the name Mai.
His entry into animation came after watching Mirai Shounen Conan, which left enough of an impression to pull him into the industry. He started as a production assistant at Toei Douga, then moved through Shin-Ei Douga before landing at Sunrise, where he eventually became the leader of Studio 7.
He's best known for directing the super robot cult classic Yuusha Ou GaoGaiGar, along with Brigadoon and Betterman.
