FAKE TYPE. is a Tokyo-based duo formed in August 2013 by composer and rapper DYES IWASAKI alongside trackmaker and rapper TOPHAMHAT-KYO.
The group's sound pulls heavily from dance and pop music with an energetic, chaotic edge, though they freely mix in influences from rap, hip-hop, and electro swing. What's really set them apart, though, is their visual work—fans often cite their stylish, intricately animated music videos as a major draw. These typically feature a morally ambiguous couple, Baron Ham (KYO's counterpart) and Ms. Iwasake (DYES's counterpart), stumbling through bizarre early-20th-century scenarios: monster hunts, desert treasure raids, that sort of thing. The chemistry between these characters and the sheer aesthetic polish of the videos have become pretty iconic in their fanbase.
The group went on official hiatus April 1st, 2017, so both members could pursue solo work, though they still collaborated on projects during the break. They officially returned to active group status as of September 30th, 2020, and have continued making music together since.
