Tetsuya Komuro, better known as TK, is a Japanese keyboardist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter who basically shaped modern Japanese pop music as its most successful producer. He's widely credited with bringing dance music into the mainstream there during the 1990s, a decade where he was arguably one of the most influential figures in the entire industry. He also owned Velfarre, a major nightclub in Roppongi, Tokyo.
His production numbers are staggering. Singles he wrote have sold over 70 million copies in Japan alone, while songs with his lyrics have moved another 42 million units. Overall, his produced records have topped 170 million sales domestically. In April 1996, he pulled off something unprecedented on the Oricon charts—occupying all five Top 5 positions simultaneously as songwriter and producer. The year before, he swept the top three spots in JASRAC copyright distribution rankings, a feat unmatched in Japanese music history.
At his commercial peak, the collective of artists he produced became known as the TK Family. This roster included Namie Amuro, hitomi, TRF, Tomomi Kahala, and Ami Suzuki, among others, and TK's fingerprints were all over the decade's biggest hits.
Beyond chart dominance, he's also worked on anime soundtracks, producing the ending theme for the Gegege no Kitarou broadcast selection titled "Party of Monsters," performed by Kiyoshi Hikawa.
