Maki Ohguro is a Japanese pop singer and songwriter from Sapporo, Hokkaido, currently signed to B-Gram Records.
She broke into the industry in 1989 after winning the 3rd Annual BAD audition, which led to work as a backup vocalist for major Being Inc. artists including B'z, ZARD, and DEEN. By 1992, she'd nearly walked away to pursue opportunities in America, feeling stuck in a supporting role—but the company president offered her a solo contract, and she decided to stay.
Her breakthrough came with her second single "DA・KA・RA," which shifted over 1.1 million copies and earned her the Japan Record Grand Prix Newcomer Award. She became known as a "phantom singer" due to her limited public presence, a reputation she shared with Izumi Sakai of ZARD. The Slam Dunk ending theme "Anata Dake Mitsumeteru" was the second-biggest song in January 1994 and went platinum, selling just over 1.08 million copies.
A six-year health-related hiatus beginning in 2010 pulled her out of the spotlight, but she returned to active music-making under Being Inc. in 2016.
