James Hong started out studying civil engineering at the University of Minnesota, but acting eventually pulled him in a different direction. He finished his degree at USC and actually worked as a road engineer for LA County for about a year and a half before deciding the film industry was worth the risk. He'd take sick leave and vacation time to audition and film, until he finally made the leap to acting full-time.
He's best known as one of the most prolific Asian-American character actors in film and TV, with an enormous filmography spanning decades. Beyond his on-screen work, Hong co-founded the East-West Players, which remains the oldest Asian American theater company in Los Angeles. He also served as president and charter member of the Association of Asian Pacific American Artists.
These days he's based in Los Angeles and looking to move behind the camera—he's planning to produce and direct his own projects.
