Denki Groove started in 1989 when Takkyu Ishino and Pierre Taki, both from Shizuoka, decided to form a group. They officially launched on April 26—the exact same day their previous band, ZIN-SÄY!, broke up. Yoshinori Sunahara was part of the lineup from 1991 to 1999.
The group dropped their first release, 662 BPM, in 1990 before signing to a major label. Flash Papa followed in 1991 as their official major-label debut. Their single "Shangri-La" became a huge hit, moving over half a million copies. The band took a break from 2001 to 2004, then returned to active work.
