Tori Miki is a Japanese manga artist, character designer, and writer born February 23, 1958. He's best known for his gag manga and science fiction work, with a career spanning several decades and multiple award wins to his name.
His pen name came from rearranging the kanji of his real name, and he also goes by Micky Bird or Mickey Bird. He studied English literature at Meiji University but didn't finish his degree—while there, he joined the rakugo research club and studied alongside future comedian Masayuki Watanabe.
Tori broke into manga professionally in 1979 after earning an honorable mention at the 12th Shounen Champion Rookie Manga Awards for his story "My Alien." From there, he built a solid reputation creating gag manga like "Kuru Kuru Kurin" and "Tooku e Ikitai," often weaving in science fiction elements. His work became a regular fixture in the TV guide magazine TV Bros. for years.
The awards came steadily: he won Seiun Awards in 1994 (for "Dai-Hon'ya") and 1998 (for SF Taisho), plus a Bungeishunjuu Manga Award in 1995 for "Tooku e Ikitai." He's also worked as a writer on "WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3," expanding his portfolio beyond manga into screenwriting.
