Yuji Nomi is a composer and arranger born in Tokyo in 1958. He got his start creating layered synth music for art gallery performances and installations, work that caught the attention of Ryuichi Sakamoto. That connection led to his debut LP, Oshare TV, released on MIDI record in 1986 under Sakamoto's guidance. From there, he became part of Sakamoto's circle, arranging and composing for several of his film projects including Adventures of Milo and Otis, Wings of Honneamise, and The Last Emperor, where he served as orchestrator.
Nomi's most notable work came through Studio Ghibli. He composed the score for Whisper of the Heart in 1995, then returned to create music for two short films directed by Hayao Miyazaki—Koro's Walk and Whale Hunting—made specifically for the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo in 2001. He later worked on The Cat Returns, directed by Hiroyuki Morita, further establishing himself as a key composer for the studio.
