Ryuk, a bored death god, tells another shinigami about the time he dropped his Death Note into the human world—and the kid who found it. Light Yagami is a straight-A student who discovers the notebook and quickly figures out what it does: write someone's name, picture their face, and they die. He's always thought society is corrupt and full of scumbags, so he decides to use it. Kill all the criminals, create a perfect world. Simple. Pretty soon, people start dropping dead from heart attacks, and it's obviously not random. The authorities bring in L, basically the world's greatest detective, to figure out what's happening. What follows is basically a high-stakes game of cat and mouse between Light and L—two geniuses trying to outsmart each other, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance. Light's got his supernatural weapon. L's got his mind. And neither one's willing to back down.
