Synopsis

The Mizuhanome System is cutting-edge tech that lets people dive into the human mind—basically one of the most fascinating places you can go. When a crime happens, detectives from the specialized unit Kura use "cognition particles" left behind by the killer to pull up the criminal's unconscious mind as a chaotic stream of thoughts in a virtual world. The detectives then explore this psychological space, called an "id well," to figure out who committed the crime. Thing is, you can't just walk into an id well. There's one major requirement: you have to be a murderer yourself. That's where former detective Akihito Narihisago comes in. Inside the id wells, he goes by "Sakaido." He used to be a respected cop, but something went wrong—tragedy hit, and he ended up on the wrong side of the law. Even so, Narihisago keeps working for Kura while locked up. His detective skills are still sharp and useful for investigations, but he starts to realize things aren't adding up. Underneath what looks like a bunch of random murder cases is something way darker going on.
